We've all been there... going deep into a YouTube guitar rabbit hole watching players like Hendrix, in awe of how he had such control over the instrument and how he could come up with insanely creative and original ideas...
And then you watch SRV flow through a full set night after night with ridiculous consistency and prowess while maintaining a visceral intensity unrivalled still to this day...
You see players like John Mayer combining all of his influences into an amalgamation of guitar euphoria, it is safe to say he has reached the promised land of guitar playing and has solidified his place among the pantheon of the guitar gods (go watch one of his Instagram live guitar sessions on YouTube, you will see what I mean).
Upon studying each player I noticed they all have these things in common... amazing control with the right hand along with an uncanny ability to embellish chord progressions effortlessly with relative pentatonic shapes to the chords. Pair these with prolific fretboard knowledge and you are well on your way to becoming a master in your own right!
Throughout this course we will be analysing the key concepts and techniques behind the playing of these 3 iconic guitar players. We will dive into how you can transfer these techniques to your own guitar playing and finally be at the level you want to be!
Killing Floor - Jimi Hendrix
After hours of scouring YouTube and watching videos of Hendrix, I realised a large part of his sound is characterised by his consistent right hand technique. A perfect example of this is shown in his rendition of Killing Floor. Learning this song really helped me develop my left and right hand synchronisation by muting unwanted notes with my left hand and keeping a consistent rhythm with my right. By mastering this technique it will bleed into your lead playing, allowing you to create more rhythmic lead passages.
Lenny - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Watch any live video of SRV and you see instantly that he was an absolute master of blistering right hand technique. But what really sets him apart to me is not only his high intensity attack but his incredibly dynamic playing in songs like Lenny and Riviera Paradise. It became very apparent to me when diving deep into SRV's back catalogue how well he could create tension by mixing major and minor pentatonic. By learning how to create phrases utilising the combination of the major and minor 3rd, you get that instant 'bluesy' sound synonymous with masters like SRV. It is an integral aspect of this playing style and one which we definitely be covering in the course!
Wait Until Tomorrow - John Mayer
I love watching Mayer pay homage to his influences. The way he adds a contemporary spin to the 'Strat Style' guitar technique, you can tell he has put hours and hours into honing his craft and taking it to the furthest reaches. His dynamic chordal playing in his rendition of 'Bold As Love' is sublime and his fretboard fluidity is prevalent by watching any one of his live performances. But the way that he mixes all of the techniques of his influences was the catalyst for me to create this course! My goal was to dissect each players concepts and techniques in the hopes of creating a way to understand what makes this playing style so enticing to guitarists.
