Little Wing
Little Wing was written by Jimi Hendrix and was released in 1967 as part of Hendrix's second studio album 'Axis: Bold As Love'. The original piece is 2 and half minutes long, featuring one of the most iconic chord progressions in guitar history. Every guitar player has played Little Wing at some stage in their career. It is a 'rite of passage' guitar piece for all players looking to dive into the 'strat' style of guitar playing that Hendrix, SRV and Mayer are known for.
It is no secret that Stevie Ray Vaughan was heavily inspired by Hendrix. Heres a quote from Stevie:
“I loved Jimi a lot. He was so much more than just a blues guitarist. He could do anything. I was about sixteen when he died. I could do some of his stuff by then but actually I’ve been trying to find out what he was doing more so lately than I was then. Now I’m really learning how to do it and I’m trying to expand on it – not that I can expand on it a whole bunch. But I try.” - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Stevie paid tribute to Jimi in most (if not all) of his live performances and studio albums, whether it was performing cover songs or showcasing Jimi's influence in his own playing. Stevie's version of Little wing is a 7 minute tribute to Jimi, expanding on the 2 minute original piece with extended solo's and unmatched nuance seldom seen to this day.
